AI Discussions Brew
Generative AI is only in the beginning stages of its development and impact on society.
1/ Celebrity Woes- Scarlett?
And if you watched OpenAI’s demo last week for GPT-4o, you’ll have noticed something interesting in the voice of 4o- it sounded exactly like Scarlett Johansson.
However, after a few days, OpenAI has suspended that voice, citing AI “should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice”
Her publicist has responded:
Infringement? Or an overreaction?
The sound-alike nature of voice models will definitely become a more prominent issue as AI improves in performance in the next few months.
2/ UK seeking transparency over AI
Across the pond, the British culture secretary is demanding transparency from AI companies on their training data - particularly their use of books, TV shows, and music. The entertainment industry is understandably wary, claiming current practices don't align with fair use.
Brace yourselves, this clash over intellectual property rights is just the opening salvo in the AI era's inevitable legal skirmishes.
3/ Windows AI PCs?
At an event at their Campus, Microsoft unveiled a new category of PCs designed specifically for AI, Copilot + PCs.
They have silicon capable of 40+ Trillion Operations per cecond, all-day battery life access to the advanced AI models, and Recall, where you can generate AI images in real-time on device using co-creator.
AI oriented hardware is really on the upswing, especially if you’re into Microsoft Teams.
4/ South Korea urges world to cooperate on AI
The Science and Technology minister in South Korea emphasizes the need for global cooperation on AI.
Many currently view AI as an arms race between nations to produce the best models, and so they see open source as giving advantages to other nations. Many accelerationists say the opposite- that we need to open source to speed up the AI development curve
One thing's clear - this disruptive technology now holds the world's future in its calculations, making it a pivotal issue on the geopolitical chessboard.
