Keys to Eight Sleep's Success

A Founder's Sleepy Tale

What’s one activity that has, probably, has the biggest impact on all other areas of our life? Think about something that impacts mood, motivation, energy, mental disorders, reaction time, disease prevention- pretty much everything.

If you guessed indulging excessively in McDonald’s, you’re almost correct.

We’re talking about the human’s sacred window: the regenerative sacred activity of sleeping.

And we’re not just talking about sleeping itself, we’re talking about a founder who has absolutely disrupted the mattress industry, an industry valued at $45.2 billion with a compounded annual growth rate of 6.9% over the next few years. Before I get into an elaborate TAM pitch to angel investors reading this, let's discuss the product's story.

Matteo Franceschetti, and Alexandra Zatarain founded the company, Eight Sleep, in 2014 to basically gather the KPIs of your sleep. Specifically, the Eight Sleep mattress tracks your respiration, heart rate, temperature, and sleep phases including REM sleep, and deep sleep. This is both wild and wildly useful.

Management guru Peter Drucker once eloquently stated, “What gets measured, gets managed.” Sleep is no different, and the Eight Sleep team understands this.

For those familiar with a SaaS dashboard, think of the eight sleep as a smart dashboard for your sleeping health. The products they have are the Pod Pro Mattress, and the Pod Pro Cover, all on a beautifully designed Shopify store.

Recently, in an interview, Matteo has stated that building key relationships- be it with YCombinator, institutional investors, or manufacturers in China- has been the most important strategy for building Eight Sleep into the large company it is today (valuation of $500 million).

But wait, there’s more.

Another key to the company’s success is undoubtedly SEO. I tested various combinations of “best mattress to sleep on”, and “sleeping analytics”- Eight sleep came in hot with their blog articles each time.

But wait, there’s even more- kidding, this is a very efficiently run company that reached out to the right people, kept their heads down, and worked for years on product, brand, and distribution. So, they’re reaping the rewards now. And in turn, you’re reaping the rewards of better-sleeping analytics.

It’s an infinite beautiful cycle.

Alright, lads, this has been the sleepy edition of The ZenPreneur. Peace out, and get some rest.
