Return of the Jedi: OpenAI Resolution

For Now

So we’ve got more things going down in the world of AI.

For those that had a digital detox this last weekend and kept off social media, you didn’t miss much…

Only that the AI industry’s crown jewel, OpenAI, seems to currently be up in flames, the CEO was ousted in what appears to be a board room coup, and that 96% of the company signed a letter that they want to quit, back and forth negotiations, Twitter users are glued to the screen following every development, drama, escalation.…

And the situation didn’t seem to be resolved seem to be resolved until a few hours back..

Yep, no biggie..

Satya Nadella went on TV yesterday, stating that he’ll work with Sam, no matter what path he goes down.

What’s even wilder? Helen Toner, one of the board members who voted to kick Sam out, has stated:

That’s a wild statement, and perhaps, a conflict of interest- a board member herself who states that destroying her own organization would be aligned with the mission?

If this is “effective altruism”....then its really counterproductive.

Anyways, when the out-of-control board tried to bring in Emmet Shear as the new CEO, he initially accepted. However, yesterday, he indicated that, unless the board specifies exactly why they fired Sam, he would resign as CEO.

And they did not provide anything. So, that specific instance seems to have been the turning point last night.

Additionally,  during this turmoil yesterday, ChatGPT was down for a few hours. Coincidence? I think not.

And now, after a few hours…OpenAI’s social media coordinators sent this out:

And it’s settled (for now…). Unless there’s some more turmoil that’s yet to spring up- if the last few days have taught the tech world anything, it’s to expect the unexpected…

Anyways, with the new board (with Adam being the constant), things seem to have gotten patched up.

And Sam seems to have liked the way things turned out:

This debacle, whether it was a conflict of interest, a war between AI acceleration and AI regulation proponents, or a vindictive board room power grab… this only reaffirms the need for decentralized, open-source AI.

And, one thing’s for sure: this will 100% be made into a movie in the next few years.

Auditions anyone?

Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving, and peace out.
